cannabis, weed, drugsCity weekly brief February 13 to February 19, 2012

There have been some outstanding results and achievements this week with lots of proactive work, swift arrests, charges and the discovery of another cannabis factory. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my officers who continue to work extremely hard in the fight against crime and protecting the streets of Leicester, well done to you all.

Firstly I would like to start by mentioning how pleased I was to hear that a 32-year-old man was charged with five counts of burglary after five business premises were targeted in the city between February 4 and February 10. It is always satisfying to have a result of this kind. Burglars cause an immense amount of misery to victims of crime, and in the business community the true cost of crime is often hidden, but then passed onto customers so in reality we all pay for their criminal activity.

A successful operation to tackle burglary in the Beaumont Leys and Hinckley Road areas of the city has resulted in three people being sentenced and ten others being charged and awaiting court appearances. Officers have worked very hard to get these results and we are hopeful that this operation will reduce the chances of you falling victim to burglary by targeting those responsible. To read more about the operation see, http://www.leics.police.uk/news/6070_thirteen_charged_as_part_of_city/.

The success continued with the arrest of a 22-year-old man on Wednesday. He was arrested in Nottingham in connection with the attempted cash-in-transit robbery on Blackbird Road, Leicester, on February 7, which you may have heard about in the news. To read the full story click on the following the link, http://www.leics.police.uk/canyouhelp/appeals/8946_man_arrested_after_attempted_cashintransit_robbery/.

An unlicensed city bar was closed last week by the police City Licensing Team, in conjunction with Leicester City Councils Licensing Department and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. Officers conducted a warrant under The Misuse of Drugs Act at Lounge Leicester on Clyde Street and discovered drugs paraphernalia along with an unlicensed and unauthorised bar. The premises had no licence to sell alcohol or play music. To read more on the unlicensed bar follow the link, http://www.leics.police.uk/news/6066_unlicensed_city_bar_shut_down/. This closure highlights how committed all agencies in Leicester are to shutting down illegally run premises and providing a safe environment for people going out in the city.

As I mentioned earlier, the last week has also seen the discovery of a cannabis factory within a business premises in Overton Road. It was quite a large professional set up with over 150 plants recovered from the building. Two men have been arrested as part of the investigation. This is the second cannabis factory in two weeks to be discovered and highlights the proactive work carried out by my officers. Drugs misuse will not be tolerated and I would ask anyone with any suspicions about drugs misuse in the area to contact us as the information you provide may help us with our investigations and bringing people to justice.

In addition over the last week in the city, officers received 2,178 calls for assistance and arrested 368 people for a total of 685 offences.

Finally, I would just like to mention that on our website we have a new section whereby members of the public can view photographs of recovered property. Why not have a look and see if you recognise any of the items? Visit www.leics.police.uk home page to view the Flickr photostream.
