Police invite cyclists to cycle marking event at Knighton Park

Posted on 22/02/12

police, constabulary, leicestershire policePolice invite cyclists to cycle marking event at Knighton Park

A cycle marking event is being held at Knighton Park this Friday (February 25).

Cyclists living in the Knighton area are invited to attend the Sensory Gardens, within the park between 10am and 12pm, to get their bike security marked for free.

Anyone living outside the Knighton area is still welcome to attend but will be charged 6 for the cycle marking service.

PC David McCartney, beat officer for the Knighton ward, said: I decided to set up the marking event to help reduce cycle thefts in the area. On average Welford Road Police Station receives about four reports a week of stolen cycles. I would like to bring this figure down even more by making people aware of what they can do to help protect their bikes and to make bikes less appealing to steal.

One way of doing this is to get your bike security marked. If a bike is marked it can often put off a potential thief from stealing it as it can make it easier to trace the legitimate owner if a bike is recovered by the police.

Fix My Bike Cycles will be assisting us in security marking bikes with SmartWater. SmartWater is a clear solution that shows up when an ultra violet light is shone across it, which can help in the process of tracing items.

I would like to thank the Knighton Ward Committee and the Welford Road Joint Action Group for funding the SmartWater kits.

I would urge anyone with a new bike to come along and get their bike marked.

Cyclists are asked to bring with them proof of address in the form of a recent utility bill and proof of ownership of the bike such as a receipt, in order to get their bike security marked for free.

Officers would encourage cyclists to register their bike for free on Immobilise, the UK National Property Register. Log on to www.immobilise.com to register your bike frame number and to upload a photograph of your bike. This could assist the police in returning the bike to its rightful owner in the event it is stolen and later recovered.
