Brian Kemp sentenced at crown court today (Friday February 10)

A man who carried out robberies on a bank and a building society in Leicester city centre has been sentenced at Leicester Crown Court.

Brian Kemp (45) was sentenced to six years after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to two armed robberies. He was also issued with a confiscation order under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The first incident took place on Tuesday August 30, 2011 at Nationwide Building Society and the second incident was on Tuesday September 27, 2011 at the Yorkshire Bank, both in Horsefair Street.

During both incidents Kemp threatened members of staff and claimed that he had a gun.

The defendant was identified by a city centre police officer who remembered having contact with a man who looked similar to the suspect on the CCTV obtained from the robberies.

Detective Constable Rob Buckley investigated the incidents, he said: Thanks to an observant police officer we were able to identify the offender and quickly bring him to justice.

These were serious offences carried out in broad daylight in front of members of the public, the offender had no regard for the affect this may have on all those involved and we hope the sentence passed today will reassure all those affected by the events of last Summer.
