Harborough Be Safe, a community volunteer scheme to help the elderly and vulnerable, has secured the home of its 2000th elderly resident.

The scheme was launched in December 2002 to help the elderly, the vulnerable and victims of crime. To date, the Harborough Be Safe volunteers have secured the homes of 2000 residents. They are given door bars, 10 year smoke alarms, spy holes, letter box guards and, in some cases, replacement door locks as well as sound crime prevention advice, all of which is entirely free of charge.

Marion has, with support from the police and Harborough District Community Safety Partnership, recruited a team of fully vetted and trained police community volunteers. Neighbourhood Watch has also raised thousands of pounds to allow the scheme to continue to support the most vulnerable within our community.

Marion Lewis, Chair of the Harborough District Neighbourhood Watch Association, said; This successful initiative has the direct impact of making elderly residents and victims of crime physically more secure and less vulnerable to distraction burglaries. However, the work of the volunteers also has a very important impact on the well-being of victims as they spend time with each victim, many of whom live on their own. The volunteers provide the advice and reassurance that helps them to feel confident and more secure.

The scheme also holds a regular stall at the indoor market in Market Harborough, where we can engage with the local community by offering free safety advice and offer support to more than one hundred visitors each month. We have distributed more than ten thousand purse bells and chains to protect shoppers from purse dipping and handbag theft which has been bought been using Community Cashback funding.

The 2000th recipient of the scheme is Mrs Mary Bones from Market Harborough. She had three bottles of spirits and a small amount of money stolen during a burglary. A 16 year old boy was arrested and has subsequently been charged with four burglaries.

The volunteers have fitted two door bars and a jacklock to her kitchen window, a padlock to her side gate and planed the door to stop it sticking. She also had a trellis fitted on her fence. The volunteers visited her three times to complete the work.

Mrs Bones said; It is very frightening when someone you dont know has been in your house and the Harborough Be Safe volunteers were absolutely marvellous. They come round and they just make you feel safer, they were just wonderful. Ive got a marvellous safety catch on the door and an outside light, I am very grateful.

Inspector Paul McKinder, Commander of Market Harborough local policing unit, said; The volunteers at Harborough offer an amazing service which has now helped two thousand people living across the district. This is a great achievement when you consider they give up their own time, often at short notice, to respond to the needs of victims and vulnerable residents in the area.

They take the time to talk to people offering the advice and reassurance that enables them to feel confident and more secure and therefore less likely to become a repeat victim. This reduces crime and the fear of crime. My congratulations go to Marion and her team.
