The police are appealing for help to find whoever is responsible for stealing items from the graveyard in Newbold Verdon.

Over the last six months, local officers have had five thefts reported to them but they think there may be other incidents which they havent been told about. The thefts have been sporadic, they havent targeted any one grave and a variety of items have been stolen including flowers and ornaments. The incidents are happening at the graveyard next to St. James Church on Main Street in the village.

Members of the neighbourhood beat team have been carrying out investigations including plain clothed patrols at different times of the day and night.

PC 344 Jon Shaw is the beat officer for the village. He said; It is naturally very distressing to visit the grave of a loved one and find that items have been stolen. Weve had a series of thefts reported to us and I am keen to stop it happening again. Because people dont visit the graves everyday it is sometimes hard to establish exactly when things have been stolen and the church is in an isolated location so there arent any witnesses to the thefts so we have no way of knowing if it is one person or several people who are committing these crimes.

Ive been asking everyone in the village to keep an eye on the comings and goings at the church and graveyard and if they see anyone acting suspiciously to report it to the police straight away. We are also working with the church and the parish council to investigate these incidents and local officers have been carrying our plain clothed observations at the cemetery. If anyone has any information about the people committing these offences I would like to hear from them.

Mrs Jean Harris, who lives in the village, had eight flower arrangements stolen from her sons grave on the 14th anniversary of his death. Her son, Scott, died on the 10th January 1998 while walking home from the funeral of one of five young men who died in a car crash on 2nd January 1998. He was eighteen. Mrs Harris said; My husband visited Scotts grave to light a candle and was shocked to find the flowers had been stolen. He found the wrappings had been taken off the flowers and dumped at the edge of the cemetery but there as no sign of the flowers.

It was awful to discover the flowers had been taken at such a poignant time for us and we have other relatives buried at the cemetery as well and items have been taken from their graves too. We are keen to help the police catch the people who are doing this.

Anyone with information is urged to call Leicestershire Police on 101* or Crimestoppers, which is free** and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.

* Calls to 101 cost 15p for the entire call from both mobile phones and land lines
