Police are appealing for witnesses after an inappropriate gesture was made to a 16-year-old girl in Belgrave.

The incident happened on Sunday, January 1 at around 2pm in Canon Street when a man approached the victim and made an inappropriate gesture and comments, before trying to grab her. The victim ran off.

The man is described as an Asian in his 30s, 56 to 58 tall, of medium build, with short black hair above his ears and flat on top. He had a beard and a moustache that was not full but more than stubble and a round face. He was wearing a white fleece and dark blue jeans.

PC Laura Nutt, who is investigating the incident said: There may be a possibility that other people have been a victim of the same behaviour but have not contacted the police. I would appeal to anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a similar incident to contact me as soon as possible.

I would also like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC 4312 Laura Nutt on 101 and follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer. When prompted, key in her identification number 4312. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
