City weekly brief January 30 - February 5

robbery,theft,policeCity weekly brief January 30 - February 5

I would like to start by thanking the people of Leicester for their support in ensuring that Saturdays protests by the English Defence League (EDL) and Leicester Unite Against Fascism (UAF) passed peacefully in the city centre.

The policing operation took a great deal of planning and involved more than 2,000 officers and staff on the day from 17 police forces. Despite around 900 EDL and UAF supporters taking part in the two demonstrations, I am delighted to say that there were no arrests directly connected to the marches.

This success could not have been achieved without the support and co-operation of local communities and in particular businesses along the routes, and I am immensely grateful for this. No route through the city centre could suit everyone, but the decision to facilitate marches on the day meant that it could largely be business as usual on Saturday and I was pleased to see how quickly things returned to normal after the demonstrations. I look forward to seeing lots of visitors this week as the Comedy Festival and Big Eat 2 attract people to our city.

Away from the demonstrations, it has been another busy week and I was pleased to see the professional way in which policing was maintained by officers for our communities across the city. Over the last seven days my officers arrested 306 people for a total 535 offences, and they answered 2,362 calls for assistance.

Two of those arrests related to an armed robbery at Ram Jewellers in Belgrave which occurred on Monday January 30. Two men, both aged 22, have been arrested and released on police bail. For more information please follow the link:http://www.leics.police.uk/canyouhelp/suspects/611_police_make_a_second_arrest_in/

My officers have appealed for information this week in relation to a racist attack that took place at about 11.45am on Sunday January 15, in Beaumont Walk in Beaumont Leys. The victim sustained serious injuries to his face. This behaviour is unacceptable and I know officers are vigorously conducting enquiries to trace those responsible, to bring them to justice. If you have any information please get in touch. To read more about this assault, click on the following link: http://www.leics.police.uk/canyouhelp/appeals/8897_27yearold_man_assaulted_after_being_subjected/

We continue our efforts to reduce crime in the city by making people aware of simple security measures which they can take. Last week officers supported security staff at the University of Leicester with a Cycle Safety Day. Students can often be perceived to be an easy target for thieves and this event focused on road safety issues as well as cycle security. http://www.leics.police.uk/news/6025_cycle_safety_day_launched_at_university/

Thank you once again for your support during what has been a challenging week. With the weekend behind us, normal business is resumed! We will continue to do our best to keep the city safe and crime-free and an enjoyable place to visit.
