Transport funding bid considered

Leicestershire County Council is preparing to submit a bid for 4.5m to improve sustainable transport in and around Loughborough and Coalville.

The money would be used to cut congestion in the towns, boost the local economies and cut carbon.

Around 70 businesses have backed the bid which the council is set to submit towards the end of the month.

The proposals will be presented to the councils Cabinet when it meets on Friday, February 10.

They include rolling out tried and tested projects such as:

The expansion of 'Wheels to Work' - where young people are loaned scooters to go to work or training

Walking and cycling network improvements e.g. new cycle ways and improved signs

The promotion of sustainable forms of transport e.g. car sharing, travel phone apps, smarter ticketing, buses and trains

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Transport is a vital factor in our everyday lives and we're seizing the opportunity to make big improvements.

"Ultimately, better transport plays a big part in making sure that Leicestershire remains an attractive place to live, work and visit."

Notes:

The bid will be made to the government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund and submitted by February 24th 2012 - successful bids will be announced in May.

Further work to analyse the evidence underpinning the third Local Transport Plan for Leicestershire has identified Loughborough and Coalville as initial priority areas for transport investment.

The LSTF bid will enhance and accelerate the delivery of improvements. Work continues to identify the next priority areas of Leicestershire, which will benefit from the bid by earlier introduction of similar measures.
