Officers from Hinckley Road police station are issuing their second warning in two weeks after more homes were targeted for their copper gas pipes.

On January 19, two properties in Mountcastle Road had their gas pipes cut and stolen. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Transco attended the scene to secure the area and police have been carrying out enquires.

Police issued a warning to local residents on the same day but since then there have been a further three properties targeted.

Sergeant Will Cheshire from Hinckley Road police station, said: We are issuing this second warning as gas pipes are still being targeted. I must express how serious this is. Tampering with live gas pipes is an extremely dangerous act and could have fatal results.

The stolen pipes were situated in alleyways next to properties. So I would like to reiterate the same message from two weeks ago, anyone with external gas pipes running along the side of their property are encouraged to secure alleyways by using gates and making sure they are locked.

Officers are targeting vulnerable properties in the area by property marking external gas pipes with SmartWater. SmartWater is a clear solution that shows up when an ultra violet light is shone across it, which can help in the process of tracing items.

As part of the investigation a 47 year-old man has been charged with theft. The charge relates to copper piping being stolen from a house on Tudor Road, on February 1. He has been remanded into custody to appear at Leicester Magistrates Court today (February 2).

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sergeant 1820 Will Cheshire on 101*, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officers identification number 1820. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free** and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.

*Calls to 101 cost 15p for the entire call for both mobile phones and landlines.

**Please note that some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
