Cycle Safety Day launched at University of Leicester

Students from the University of Leicester are to receive free bicycle D locks and road safety advice on Thursday February 2, to reduce cycle crime.

The Cycle Safety Day will feature specialist police officers who will provide road safety information, free bike maintenance and a host of other initiatives as well as the popular lock swap where effective D-locks will be given to student cyclists who have been identified on campus with inadequate cycle locks. The locks can be collected from 10am to 3pm in Mayors Walk, Central Campus, or inside the Percy Gee building by Greenhouse Two if its raining.

Cycle thefts account for 44% of all crime at the University of Leicester, and this trend continues to rise. The University, together with neighbourhood officers PC Harvey Watson and PCSO Amarjit Sanghera of the beat team, are working hard to reduce this figure. Crime reduction work includes the building of a large, controlled access, underground cycle store in front of the David Wilson Library. The store will hold up to 300 bikes and will be launched in time for the Leicestershire Cycle Challenge.

PC Watson said: During the last three months a total of 115 bicycles have been stolen in the city centre, compared to 93 in a similar period last year. This equates to an increase of 23%. We are pleased to work with the University of Leicester to help students avoid becoming victims of crime.

Inspector Chris Cockerill is the Commander of the City Centre police station. He said: This initiative has been introduced to educate cyclists about road safety as well as cycle security. I want to drive home the message that cheap cycle locks do not adequately protect your bike. Bicycle D locks are a very effective deterrent against cycle thieves, and I am delighted the University of Leicester have funded this initiative.
