arrest,villain,police,constabularyCity weekly brief January 23 to 29, 2012

You may be aware that yesterday, Leicestershire Police and Leicester City Council announced that the English Defence League (EDL) and Leicester Unite Against Fascism (UAF) will undertake marches in the city on Saturday (February 4). Extensive liaison has taken place and concerns raised by communities, local businesses and residents have been taken into consideration, with two routes having now been announced. Of course, a large team of officers experienced in policing large scale events will support the policing of both marches on Saturday, in order to prevent any potential disruption from occurring and ensuring that the City remains as normal as possible. To find out more, please take five minutes to read the attached press release: http://www.leics.police.uk/news/6018_police_and_council_reassure_public_following/

I am pleased to report that day-to-day policing continues to a high standard in the city area, with officers arresting 375 people for a total 752 offences over the past week. In addition we responded to 2,245 calls for assistance.

You may be aware that Leicestershire Police fully embraces the use of social media to better communicate with our communities, and city officers are currently being trained in this new technology. Some officers are becoming very proficient in the use of Twitter and Facebook, and I also send and receive messages (@robnixoncity). I am pleased to note messages are starting to reflect the appreciation of services provided by police personnel. Heres an example of a recent Facebook message: would just like to say how amazing, friendly and helpful the Evington Team are. I know you all can get a tough time, but the work you all do is much appreciated by most! Thank you for your kind messages of support, which are valued by all members of police personnel.

Theres a popular saying about how the Canadian Mounties always get their man. Well, this is certainly true about Leicestershire Police recently when a 36 year-old-man was found guilty of two rapes committed in the city centre in the early 1990s when he was a teenager. Advances in DNA technology mean that crimes committed many years ago may still be detected. We have a continued commitment to review cases and bring criminals to justice. To read more about this story, follow the link: http://www.leics.police.uk/news/6014_man_convicted_of_two_counts_of/

I have noted a recent media article about robberies on Victoria Park, and would like to reassure park users that it is as safe an area as anywhere in the city. However we must all realise that at certain times criminals frequent that location, as they do in any other city area, hoping to commit crime, and get away with it! Please read the following article which contains practical and sensible advice about crime prevention precautions:

http://www.leics.police.uk/canyouhelp/appeals/8891_victoria_park__personal_safety_advice/

I am pleased to note that city police eMeetings are growing in popularity. The recent eMeeting involving Inspector Steve Riley from Keyham Lane police station had 46 participants, asking questions about local issues, which is excellent. A further eMeeting will take place on Wednesday, February 1 from 6pm to 7pm, and I encourage everyone to participate. The good thing about eMeetings is that you can communicate with your local police officer from the comfort of your own home. Please follow the link for access information: http://www.leics.police.uk/policing/8_city_bcu/update/

I was pleased to note that the Leicester City Football Club fixture against Swindon Town on Saturday passed without disorder. There were no arrests, although six people were ejected from the ground. A total of 19,942 people attended the game which demonstrates the excellent and responsible behaviour of fans supporting both teams.

Finally, this promises to be a very busy week for Leicestershire Police. Be assured I and my officers will do all we can to ensure business continues normally in the city centre.

Ch Supt Rob Nixon
