Paul Roger White

A 36-year-old man has today been found guilty of two counts of rape, which he committed in the early 90s.

Paul Roger White, (12/04/75), of no fixed abode, was found guilty at Coventry Crown Court after a three day trial. He is due to be sentenced on Friday.

The court heard how on August 6, 1993 White assaulted, threatened and raped a 37-year-old woman in the public toilets in Calais Hill on Granby Street.

The court also heard how the following year, on March 5, White again assaulted, threatened and raped a 60-year-old woman in the toilets at Newarke Street car park. The victim of this incident has since passed away.

He was brought before the court after a routine cold case review by the regional review team retested DNA samples taken at the time of the offences.

This threw up a number of potential suspects and the team set about trying to identify the offender. White was arrested on April 21, 2011 and charged the following day with one count of rape. He was charged with another count at a later date.

Detective Constable Rob Arthur, from the forces Signal team said: I am pleased that we have been able to bring someone to justice for these crimes, however it is unfortunate one of our victims was no longer with us to see justice done.

I hope her family will get some comfort from the fact that White has been convicted and will spend a considerable amount of time behind bars.

This has been an incredibly difficult time for the surviving victim and the family of the deceased as they have had to go through the details of the terrible attacks which happened some 17 and 18-years-ago. I would like to take this opportunity to praise their courage and determination through what I know must have been a very difficult time.

Phil Taylor, from the regional review unit, who periodically reviews all cold cases said: This case illustrates the continued commitment of the unit to bring offenders to justice whilst reinforcing the ethos of seeking not only justice for those still living with the trauma of their ordeal years after the event but also to the relatives or loved ones of victims who has since passed away.

In recent years there have been significant advances in forensic science. There are now techniques available to us which were not around at the time these crimes were committed and therefore not available to the original investigators.

It also sends a strong message the public at large that these cases are not forgotten and remain within the focus of the judicial system.

Speaking after the verdict one of the deceased victims daughters said: After 18 years justice is finally done. Its a pity mum cant be with us to hear the outcome. Its over mum.

This man not only destroyed the life of my mum but ours too. I would like to thank everyone concerned in bringing this person to court and getting the right result, in particular Rob Arthur, who was a tower of strength for our family.
