City weekly brief January 16 to 22, 2012

City weekly brief January 16 to 22, 2012
Work continues this week to prepare for planned demonstrations by the English Defence League (EDL) and Leicester Unite Against Fascism (UAF) in the city centre on Saturday February 4.
The police have a duty to facilitate peaceful protests and to this end we are continuing to talk with representatives from both groups and are working closely with Leicester City Council. We are also engaging with businesses and communities around the city to listen to their concerns and offer reassurance. We are very grateful for the level of support shown by our communities and would like to reassure everyone that our priorities are to keep our city safe and minimise disruption on February 4.
No final decisions have been made regarding the form the demonstrations will take but we will ensure those affected are kept updated.
In spite of a heavy work commitment throughout the week I am proud that my officers arrested a total of 372 people for a total 647 offences. The city area dealt with a total of 2,136 calls for assistance.
Many people will have seen on the news the investigation into the murder of Mr Dogan. He was found in his flat above Aladdin Pizza in Linton Street on Sunday January 8. I am pleased to say that a 27-year-old man and 31-year-old man have been charged with murder.
I was particularly pleased to hear that four youths were arrested for several armed robberies committed against taxi drivers in the city area. A 17-year-old youth has been charged and the other three have been released on police bail. Taxi drivers are a particularly vulnerable group against whom crimes of violence are often committed usually late at night. If you want to read more about this successful police investigation, please follow the link: http://www.leics.police.uk/news/5982_youth_charged_and_three_bailed_following/ .
British Crime Survey statistics have revealed that crime is down by 11.2% across Leicestershire, placing us first in the ranks when comparing us to similar Forces. For the full details click here, http://www.leics.police.uk/news/5984_crime_down_112_across_leicestershire_/ .
From a city perspective the figures show that from April 2011 to now, we have seen a 4% drop in the number of victims which equates to 1,143 fewer victims of total crime. There have been 234 fewer victims of burglary, 101 fewer victims of vehicle crime and 170 fewer victims of assaults with minor injuries in the city, compared to the same period last year. These are fantastic results for the city. Although I am extremely pleased with these results we will continue to work hard in the fight against crime.
I have in previous reports highlighted my admiration and respect for members of the Special Constabulary, who perform such excellent work alongside their police colleagues. I encourage anyone who has four hours a week to spare to consider joining the Special Constabulary, to participate in worthwhile community policing, to learn new skills, and play their part in safeguarding local communities. A recruiting seminar for the Special Constabulary is being held on Monday, February 6 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Central Mosque, Islamic Community centre, Conduit Street, Leicester. To find out more about this event, follow the link: http://www.leics.police.uk/news/5970_special_constabulary_recruiting_seminar_leicester/
I was delighted to hear that our Chief Constable attended the launch of the Best Attendance Project, which is a project organised by police volunteer Carole Blackburn and the Police and Community Support Group. Carole and the support group took 600 school children on an outing to the Great Central Railway last Thursday, as a reward for achieving 100 per cent attendance and good work and behaviour throughout the school year. I would like to thank Carole and the group for their hard work and dedication over the years and for running such an impressive and positive project. You can read more about the Best Attendance Project by clicking here, http://www.leics.police.uk/news/5988_best_attendance_project_deemed_a_huge/ .
Finally I would like to wish you all a pleasant and crime-free week ahead. Let me know if you find this information useful, and if you think it can be improved. I welcome suggestions. Follow the link to send me a message: http://www.leics.police.uk/policing/8_city_bcu/commander/
Once again, thank you for taking the time to read this weeks round-up. For regular updates about policing in Leicester, see Twitter @robnixoncity.
