Police urge residents to tighten up on home security

Police in Beaumont Leys are asking residents to improve their home security after a rise in burglaries over the weekend.

During the period January 13 to January 15, therewere three burglaries across the Beaumont Leys area.

Items stolen include cash, power tools and electrical items such as laptops.

There have been a further three attempted burglaries, where entry was gained but items were not stolen. Two of those attempted burglaries took place in Beaumanor Road, Leicester.

Sergeant Rich Jackson, from Beaumont Leys police station, said: In one of the burglaries a ground floor window was left open and another had left their door unlocked. To prevent you becoming a victim of burglary, I would encourage you to lock all windows and doors, especially ground floor windows and doors, even if you are leaving the house for just a few moments. It only takes a few seconds for an opportunist thief to take advantage and gain entry to your property.

Although this is a significant rise in burglaries for the area, police patrols have been increased and officers are advising residents about improving their home security.

We will be distributing window shock alarms to the victims and those who are deemed vulnerable. Window shock alarms give off a loud noise alerting you to the window having been tampered with.

If you can, purchase a window shock alarm and a good quality door lock. They are available from most hardware stores and are simple ways to deter burglars and to help prevent you becoming a victim of burglary.

Officers are encouraging people to property mark their valuable items and to register them on www.immobilise.com, the free UK national property register. This can increase the chances of your property being returned to you if they were stolen and later recovered.

For more information on home security and advice about how to secure your homes, call Leicestershire Police on 101 and ask to speak to your local Crime Reduction Officer or view the crime reduction page on the Supporting Victims and Witnesses website, http://support.leics.police.uk/crime-prevention .
