Closure notice displayed on house in Abingdon Road, Leicester

Police officers from Spinney Hill Park local policing unit and officers from the Leicester Anti-Social Behaviour Unit of the city council, swooped into action on Thursday, December 22 in Abingdon Road, Leicester, to enforce the closure of a privately-owned house and evict the 30 year-old-man who lived there. The house was boarded-up by the police later.

The police application for the order had been made earlier at Leicester City Magistrates Court under section 1 of the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003, which relates to premises where drugs have been used unlawfully. The order authorises the closure of the premises for three months. Anyone entering the house within that time commits an offence for which they can be arrested.

The application follows many complaints by residents of anti-social behaviour at the address with alleged drug-dealing, visitors shouting, swearing, fighting, slamming car doors, and urinating in the street, at all times of the day and night.

Sergeant 204 Stuart Wood is the team leader of the Neighbourhood Action Team. He said: This has been a challenging enquiry, and I would like to pay tribute to brave, local people who have given statements of evidence without which this application would have failed. I also want to thank our colleagues in the Leicester Anti-Social Behaviour Unit at the city council, who worked so hard to make this successful outcome possible.

I believe the quality of life for local residents will substantially improve now that criminal activity at this house has ceased.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous said: I know local residents will be immensely relieved by the closure of this house; I know I am. The anti-social behaviour problems have been awful. Im glad this nightmare is over.

Assistant City Mayor Councillor Sarah Russell said: This brings to an enda lengthy and complex process, and I hope that it will conclude a prolonged period of suffering for local residents".

Anyone who suspects a premises is being used for drug-related crime is urged to contact Leicestershire Police on 101, or call Crimestoppers which is a free and anonymous service, on 0800 555 111.
