Unwrap the secrets to reducing festive packaging waste
Householders are being urged to get wrapped up in the idea of reducing the amount of packaging being sent to landfill this Christmas.
As part of its Dreaming of a Green Christmas campaign, the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, district and borough councils, is urging people to finish 2011 and start 2012 in a green way..
Christmas is a peak time of year for packaging waste as presents are given and extra food is consumed.
For example, it is estimated that the amount of wrapping paper that is thrown away in the UK at Christmas could stretch to the moon and back if it was laid end to end, while around 4,500 tonnes of tin foil is used enough to cover an area of around 1,500 square miles.
Tips from the Leicestershire Waste Partnership to reduce and deal with packaging waste this Christmas include:
- Buy loose fruit and vegetables
- Instead of using wrapping paper reuse gift bags or use cloth bags
- Buy products that use recycled and recyclable packaging
- When you do your big Christmas shop at the supermarket, use your own shopping bags and take any packaging you cant recycle at home with you to the recycling banks
- Check tin foil can be collected as part of your kerbside recycling or take it to a recycling bank
Guy Jackson, chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: Christmas is a time of year when we see more packaging than usual being thrown away.
By following the above tips we can all do our bit to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill over the festive period, whilst still enjoying ourselves.
