Hinckley & Bosworth schools see "how low they can go"
***Media opportunity: 1-2pm, Monday, November 21, Westfield Junior School, Westfield Road, Hinckley, LE10 OLT. Children (aka Energy Police!) can be photographed checking equipment etc is turned off. Please contact the school in advance if you wish to attend on 01455 637437 ***A total of 68 schools across Leicestershire will see how low they can go over the next two weeks by taking part in an energy saving contest.
During Switch Off Fortnight, which is organised by EDF Energy and runs from November 21 December 4, schools will take part in a County Council-run competition to reduce their energy consumption and cut down on their bills.
The school that uses the lowest amount of electricity per pupil will win
a renewable energy education kit which includes a wind turbine kit, a solar water heating kit, and a solar photovoltaics (PV) kit.
Runners up in each category will receive either a wind turbine kit, solar water heating kit, or a solar photovoltaics (PV) kit of their choice.
Westfield Junior School in Hinckley is one of the schools taking part in the initiative.
Pupils will take home an energy diary during the fortnight and, as well as learning a rap about energy saving, a group of youngsters, or energy police, will be deployed during the two weeks to check items are turned off when they are not needed.
Eco coordinator at Westfield Junior Linda Elwell said: We think Switch Off Fortnight is a really good idea and we are pleased to be able to take part. As an Eco School we are always looking at different ways to do our bit for the environment.
Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Action, said: Schools in Leicestershire are already doing a lot with regards to sustainability issues and its great that so many are getting involved with Switch Off Fortnight.
I hope the good habits youngsters learn and the actions they take will stay with them and inspire others to do their bit for the environment.
Leicestershire will join more than 3,500 schools across the country taking part in Switch Off Fortnight.
Olympic gold-medal winner and EDF Energy Ambassador Victoria Pendleton said: Encouraging children to think about the impact of their actions on the environment is really important.
Its fantastic to see 3,500 schools taking part in Switch Off Fortnight and hope it will inspire other schools, pupils, teachers and parents to get involved with EDF Energys schools programme The Pod.
