Walking and cycling boost for Redmoor students
A safer environment has been created outside a Hinckley high school to help students walk and cycle.
The 40,000 improvements, completed this week, have been introduced along Wykin Road outside Redmoor High School by Leicestershire County Council.
The scheme includes two speed tables directly outside the school and a series of eco-friendly speed 'cushions' along Wykin Road, which are made from recycled rubber tyres.
As well as being quick and easy to install, the recycled rubber cushions are much quieter, more environmentally-friendly and cheaper than the tarmac or concrete type usually used.
The boost also includes on-road cycle markings and an advisory 20mph school safety zone designed to slow traffic and encourage better driver behaviour in the area around Redmoor and Battling Brook Primary School.
It is hoped the measures will encourage more pupils to walk or cycle to school, part of Redmoor's school travel plan.
Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Walking and cycling to school not only helps to cut congestion but is a great health boost and cuts carbon emissions.
"The safer route to school measures are designed to slow drivers and help improve the quality of life for the community."
The improvements took two weeks to complete.
