Bright spark schools plug into energy saving
The County Council is helping schools to be bright sparks and plug into different ways of saving energy.
A series of workshops are being held for 21 county schools taking part in a programme helping them to become more environmentally sustainable.
The council is working with the schools as part of the SCoRE initiative (Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency) to help them reduce their carbon emissions, the amount of waste they send to landfill and their water consumption.
Workshops began during Energy Saving Week (October 24 28) and will continue throughout November. They cover a number of topics including identifying areas where schools can take simple measures to reduce their energy consumption and understanding energy data.
One school which hosted a workshop is Sherrier Primary in Lutterworth. Jackie Morley, school bursar, said: The SCoRE programme is great because it is helping us unlock ways to become even more environmentally sustainable.
It is also helps us spread the message to our pupils about how we can all do our bit for the environment.
Cllr Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Action, said: We hope that these workshops will enable schools to save more energy, enabling them to not only do their bit for the environment but to also save money at the same time.
There are ways people can also save energy at home.
Top tips from the Energy Saving Trust include:
- Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes a three inch thick insulation jacket could save you around 40 per year and pipes insulation would save 15 per year
- Prevent drafts from escaping by filling gaps in the floor with beading or mastic sealant this could save around 25 a year on your heating bills
- Be nice to your freezer freezers are the most hardworking appliances in the house. To get the best out of them dont leave the door open for too long, defrost them regularly and check the door seals are working properly
