Six men have been sentenced to more than 13 years in total for their part in the kidnap of a woman from Leicester in July 2010.

Arvinder Singh Khera (45) of Walsall, Abdul Farooqui (47) of Bolton, Gurdeep Singh Sandhu (28) of Wednesbury and Harjit Singh Dhaliwal (35) of West Bromwich pleaded guilty to kidnap and Amarjit Lal (45) and Gurpreet Singh (32) both of Walsall pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment.

All the defendants pleaded at an earlier hearing and were sentenced today (Friday October 28) at Leicester Crown Court.

Khera, Farooqui and Dhaliwal were sentenced to two years and eight months, Lal and Sandhu were sentenced to two years and Singh was sentenced to 18 months.

The conviction follows an operation conducted by Leicestershire Constabularys major crime unit following a report that an Asian woman had been kidnapped from her home address in the Highfields area of Leicester in July 2010.

The victim was an Indian national who had been brought into the country on the pretence that she will be working as a dancer in the entertainment industry.

Unfortunately when she arrived in the UK she was made to offer sexual services to men in return for money.

Detective Superintendent Mark Harrison led the investigation, he said: This was a difficult and complex investigation which involved a number of agencies including Forces from across the country.

Colleagues from the Serious and Organised Crime Agency and the UK Border Agency supported our investigation throughout and it was with their assistance that we have secured this conviction.

A number of charities have also been involved in the enquiry and have and continue to offer help and support to the victim who has been left extremely traumatised by the events of 2010.

This enquiry centred on human trafficking and sexual exploitation for financial gain, human trafficking is a crime that demeans the value of human life and is a form of modern day slavery.

Leicestershire Constabulary is also supporting the national Purple Teardrop campaign. The campaign aims to support women and girls rescued from sex trafficking and offer specialist care to help them stabilise their lives and plan how to return to normal life and to raise awareness of sex trafficking issues to the wider society.
