Thumbs-up for roads and transport in Leicestershire

Leicestershire's roads and transport have come out top in a national satisfaction survey.

Results from the questionnaire published this week rank Leicestershire as the best county council and fifth overall.

A total of 70 local authorities took part in the survey covering aspects including the condition or roads and pavements and quality of local bus services.

Last week, the council was named the top local transport authority in the UK and praised for its money-saving approach and innovative work.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "The title of best authority is the top transport award and I'm delighted that the steps we take to deliver innovation and value for money have been recognised.

"Feedback from the survey is good news and will help us to pinpoint successful projects, spot trends and work together to deliver high-quality services.

"Both achievements show that we are well placed to continue to develop and run a transport system that will continue to support the people and businesses of Leicestershire."

The NHT survey enables local authorities to compare results, share success stories and identify opportunities to work together in the future.

A total of 70 councils took part in the survey, including 22 county councils. Five thousand residents were sent questionnaires which took around 20 minutes to complete.

Leicestershire County Council has:

  • led the creation of a money-saving partnership - the Midlands Highways Alliance - which consists of 16 local authorities and the Highways Agency. By working together on deals with contractors and buying equipment jointly, it has saved more than 12.6million across the East Midlands.
  • introduced the 'choose how you move' campaign which aims to encourage residents to get fit, save money, have fun and help the environment - by leaving their cars at home.
  • launched a bid for up to 5million of government money to cut congestion, boost the local economy and reduce carbon.
  • through the MHA, established the only highway skills academy in the country
  • brought in a Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation "graduate transport planner" scheme
  • introduced the most comprehensive local transport model in the country, to help make the best decisions on where to invest in transport to support the economy
