Force highlights night time public safety work
ThisThursday (September 29) Leicestershire Constabulary and its partners will be demonstrating how they keep members of the public safe at night.
Various different organisations put a great deal of work into maintaining public safety, but often members of the public only become aware of their involvement if something goes wrong.
In Leicester City, police will be joined by environmental health officers, CCTV workers, fire and ambulance workers, a door security firm, two winners of the Best Bar None awards (Walkabout and Liquid Envy), and Street Pastors, at a series of stalls near the Clock Tower.
In Hinckley, Street Pastors will be working on Thursday evening, along with a tea bus run by St Johns Church. In Barwell, police and a range of other agencies will be running a drop-in event at the George Ward Centre, on the theme of reducing violent crime.
In North West Leicestershire and Melton, PCSOs and police officers will visit local school to raise awareness of the impact of alcohol and drug abuse, and demonstrating a knife arch at a Melton school. In Ashby town centre, Street Pastors will be working on Thursday night. The County Councils Impact youth workers will be deployed at pubs where young people are likely to gather.
Chief Inspector Adam Streets said: We and our partners put a great deal of planning and effort into making sure that people can have a night out in safety. Most of the time, most people will be unaware of this as they go about enjoying meeting friends, seeing a show, or having a drink.
We have set aside this day to show some of the different things we and our partners do. This ranges from Street Pastors spending time with people who may need support, to environmental health officers who make sure the fast food outlets are clean, to CCTV workers who work with police to keep a watching eye on people whose behaviour may get out of hand.
We have put this on during the day because we realise there are some people who rarely visit the city centre at night. This may reassure them about how safe the city centre is after dark.
The stalls will be at the city centre between 10am and 2pm on Thursday (September 29). They will be joined by the Pol-Amb vehicle a joint police-ambulance vehicle which comes to the aid of those who have received minor injuries on a Friday or Saturday night.
