Stolen cannon recovered following Stamford burglary
Recovered cannon
Police have returned a stolen cannon to its owner this week after it was taken during a burglary in Stamford.
The 18th century cannon was located and recovered from a scrap dealers the day after an appeal was released by police, on August 22, 2011.
The cannon was left at the yard by a man who attempted to sell it to the dealer.
Feeling suspicious the dealer told the man that he would need to do some checks before purchasing it. The dealer and officers liaised with each other and it was discovered to be the stolen cannon.
The cannon was stolen during a burglary at a premises in Stamford Road sometime between Saturday August 6 and Monday August 8.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the person responsible to come forward.
PC Adam Ploszczanski, the investigating officer, said: Thankfully we have been able to return the cannon to its owner but we are still seeking information about the person responsible for the theft and the man who took the cannon to the scrap yard.
If you are the man at the scrap yard I would urge you to come forward. It may be that you were sold the cannon or perhaps someone gave it to you? If so please come forward.
I would also like to speak to anyone who has information about the burglary to call us as soon as possible and help us with our enquiries.
