Council backs village housing schemes

Work could start on two village housing schemes this year, thanks to county council support.

Leicestershire County Council is proposing to support the construction of affordable homes in Sapcote and Somerby.

In March, the county council received 530,000 from the Governments New Homes Bonus, which aims to encourage councils to work with local communities to develop new housing. Leicestershires district councils received a further 2.1 million.

The funding aims to boost the number of affordable homes available to buy, to rent or for shared ownership schemes in villages, so families and young people are not forced to move out by high prices. Local housing associations have put together schemes but have been unable to proceed as there are funding gaps in their proposals. The Councils New Homes Bonus funds can help fill these gaps.

Schemes that the county council is proposing to support this year include:

12 affordable homes in Sapcote, with 332,000 earmarked from the county council and 100,000 from Blaby District Council

seven affordable homes in Somerby, with 188,000 from the county council there is an 87,000 funding gap, so support is being sought from Melton Borough Council to make the scheme happen.

10,000 for the Rural Housing Enabler scheme, which works with local communities to find suitable sites and bring forward schemes

The housing associations which are developing the schemes are also providing funding.

Council leader David Parsons said: The county council is determined to support affordable housing in our villages, using all of the 530,000 it has received this year.

Im delighted that Blaby District Council is working with us in Sapcote and I hope that other district councils will invest at least some, and preferably all, of their 2.1 million to make more schemes happen.

Think about all the homes that could be developed and all the families that could be helped, if that money is invested promptly and wisely. It is particularly important that Melton Borough Council provide funding to the Somerby scheme so that it can go ahead now.

The councils Cabinet will take the final decision on which schemes to back, at its meeting at 2pm on Tuesday, September 13th.
