Recycle small electricals and win big prizes
People who recycle broken or unwanted small electrical items such as clapped out kettles, tired toasters or has-been hair straighteners this summer will be in with a chance of winning a prize.
Electrical items that are battery operated, have a mains cable or need recharging can all be recycled.
From August 1 scratch cards offering the chance to win prizes, including one of two 300 shopping vouchers as well as travel mugs and battery chargers, will be issued to people who drop off small electrical items at 13 of the County Council's recycling and household waste sites*.
The initiative, funded by DHL Envirosolutions, will run until August 31 or until the supply of scratch cards runs out.
Electrical items taken to the County Council's sites are separated for recycling - a typical iron contains enough steel to make 13 food cans and plastic recycled from small household appliances such as a kettle can be re-used in games consoles or hairdryers.
Richard Blunt, Cabinet Member for Waste, said: "This is a great chance to not only get rid of old and broken small electrical items such as toasters and worn out hair straighteners, but be in the running to win a prize at the same time.
"People are already bringing more items to their local recycling and household waste sites and we'd like to thank them for their hard work, and encourage them to keep on recycling."
Jos Daalhuizen, Business Director DHL Envirosolutions, added: "Were delighted to be supporting Leicestershire County Council in this initiative.
By raising awareness and encouraging households to recycle their small waste electrical items, were helping reduce the amount that ultimately goes to landfill."
For more information, or to find your nearest recycling and household waste site, visit www.leics.gov.uk/waste or call 0116 305 0001.
*Note: Lount Recycling and Household Waste site is closed until early 2012 for improvement works
ENDS
Note: The County Council has waste sites in Barwell, Bottesford, Coalville, Kibworth, Loughborough, Lount, Lutterworth, Market Harborough, Melton, Mountsorrel, Oadby, Shepshed, Somerby and Whetstone
