Outdoor events celebrate Love Parks Week

National Love Parks Week kicks off in Leicestershire this weekend with a series of events at the countys top beauty spots.

The charity GreenSpace, which is organising the national week, is hoping a million people will attend events being held across the country to celebrate our parks.

As part of this, activities celebrating walking, cycling and the great outdoors will take place between Saturday, July 23 and Sunday 31 at green spaces run by the County Council.

On Sunday, July 24 a 2km guided walk exploring the history of the bloody clash between King Richard III and Henry Tudor will take place at Bosworth Battlefield. For times and admission prices call 01455 290429.

On the same day a cycle train will pull out of Watermead Country Park heading for the citys Abbey Park. The free event will also celebrate a year until the Olympics. To bring your bike and take part email: choosehowyoumove@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 3057244.

On Monday, July 25 Peter Liddle, the councils community archaeologist, will lead a guided walk exploring the late Bronze Age Hill Fort at Beacon Hill Country Park, near Woodhouse Eaves. Adults 3, children go free. Booking is not required, meet at the Upper Car Park.

Beacon Hill Country Park is also offering free chainsaw speed-carving demonstration events from Mon 25th 29th (not including 28th). Beacons resident chainsaw carving sculptor Peter Leadbeater will be running half hour sessions at 12:30pm each day at the Lower Car Park, with a competition for the onlookers to win the carving!

On Sunday July 31 the week will be rounded off by a walk another historic walk around Bosworth Battlefield.

Byron Rhodes, County Council Cabinet Member for Country Parks, said: We hope people will share their passion for Leicestershires parks by taking part in this celebration.

Love Parks Week provides a real excuse for people to explore the wonderful green gems we have right on our doorsteps here in Leicestershire.

Paul Bramhill, Chief Executive of GreenSpace, said: Love Parks Week encourages friends, families, the young and old, to come together and enjoy what our parks and green spaces offer.

People must never forget that these spaces provide many opportunities for friendships, education, health, exercise and simple play and fun. Lets remind and celebrate their meaning, get behind Love Parks Week.

Other country parks run by the County Council include Snibston, Burrough Hill, Sence Valley Forest Park and Market Bosworth Park. For more information on all its country parks visit: www.leics.gov.uk/countryparks
