Man sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of Loughborough man
Andrew Smith
A man has today (Wednesday July 6, 2011) been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a Loughborough man.
Andrew Smith (39) of Cartwright Street, Loughborough was found guilty at Coventry Crown Court today of the murder of 23-year-old Nitu Babu Das of Cleeve Mount, Loughborough.
He was sentenced toserve a minimum of 22 years.
A further defendant was acquitted of Nitus murder and perverting the course of justice.
Officers were called by the ambulance service to Pinfold Gate around 2.45am on Monday July 26, 2010 after Nitu was taken to the Loughborough Walk In Centre for treatment to a stab wound. Nitu and a group of friends had been involved in an altercation outside a property on Cartwright Street when they were chased and he was assaulted by Smith.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics but subsequently died. A post mortem examination later revealed Nitu died from a single stab wound to the heart.
Local officers quickly identified Andrew Smith who was at his nearby address.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Castle, who led the investigation team, paid tribute to Nitus family and the investigation team who worked on the enquiry.
He said: "They have been needlessly robbed of any kind of future with him and nothing will ever be the same for them. Nitus murder has had a devastating impact on his family and they have had to go through the further ordeal of losing their other son, Raj, some three months later in a road traffic collision.
I know that this has been difficult for Nitus family to sit through but we hope that todays result will help them to move forward. Id like to thank them personally for all the assistance they gave us throughout the investigation and also the support the local Muslim and Hindu communities provided to the family and the police.
We depend on witnesses to assist us to successfully prosecute offenders. Through the support from the police, they were able to give evidence and provide their accounts in this case which have been crucial in this conviction.
Furthermore I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the officers and staff, including the Crown Prosecution Service, involved for their dedication, professionalism and hard work throughout the investigation.
