One-hundred drink drivers have been arrested in 30 days since the Sober and Motoring (SAM) campaign was launched on June 1. In July 2011 alone, at least 23 people arrested during the June campaign will be facing charges in courts across Leicestershire.

Inspector Vivienne Brenchley of the Roads Policing Unit at Leicestershire Constabulary said, Were obviously disappointed that so many people have chosen to risk their lives and the lives of others by drinking and driving. We do however feel pleased that we have removed the threat these people posed to the safety of law-abiding motorists.

Mr Michael Ellis of Rutland supported the innovative nature of the Sober and Motoring (SAM) campaign, speaking out against drink driving. Mr Ellis told the story of his son Chris who was tragically killed as a passenger in a car driven by a drunk driver.

Inspector Vivienne Brenchley of the Roads Policing Unit at Leicestershire Constabulary said, We thank Mr Michael Ellis of Rutland for supporting the campaign by telling the story of his son Chris. We also wish to thank the bars and clubs who supported the campaign by offering free soft drinks to designated drivers in June.

Police continue to stop and breathalyse those who appear to be driving with impairment or who commit a moving traffic offence. Drink drive patrols will continue to take place throughout the year.
