Museum celebrates first trip organised by Thomas Cook in 1841!

Come and celebrate the first public advertised excursion by Thomas Cook on 5th July 1841 when he lived in Market Harborough and thought of the idea whilst waiting at a coach stop in Kibworth!

Harborough Museum is hosting a drop in session on Saturday 2nd July for children aged 5-12 years to make some fun holiday crafts to take home and mark the local links with the famous holiday company. (The event is from 11am-3.30pm and there is a small charge for craft materials)

The museum has a whole host of fun activities and events taking place over July ready for the school summer holidays including:

  • On a Shoe String on Saturday 9th July, 11am-3.30pm

Local artist Heather Wharam will be demonstrating her skills and inspirations from the reconstructed Falkners shoe shop in the museum. Falkners family business traded in the town from 1831 until 1986 making and selling riding boots and shoes.

The entire contents of the original workroom have been painstakingly reconstructed at the museum to create the setting of the shop which had changed little since 1901.

Heather will be using different techniques including shoe sole rubbings, carbon transfer effects and text and machine embroidery. Visitors will be able to create collages which can be transferred onto shoe templates. (Suitable for anyone aged 12 years and over. There will be a small charge for materials)

Heather Wharam will be Artist in Residence demonstrating her unique designs inspired by the cobbler's workshop reconstructed in Harborough Museum.

Heather will share her creative approach to textile work exploring responses to the exhibits through drawing, stitching and mark-making in two exciting workshops at 11am-12pm and 2pm-3pm. 1 per person. Pre-booking required. Suitable for 12 years to adult.

Heather will also be available to talk to people about her work from 12noon to 12.30pm, 1.30pm to 2pm and 3pm to 3.30pm.

  • I Love Archaeology on Saturday 16th and Saturday 23rd July, 11am-3.30pm (Free)

As part of Leicestershires Festival of Archaeology, visitors can meet local archaeological experts including flint knapper, Bob Wells, who will be demonstrating this ancient craft live in the museum. Fun kids activities supported by the BBC Learning project, Dig! and includes Poos from the past in which children can excavate a poo using archaeology skills to find out more about people from different periods in history. Visitors can also meet local archaeological experts who can help identify their finds and show off a range of finds made in the county. There will also be the opportunity to find out more about the Iron Age and Roman coins from the Hallaton Treasure, including the opportunity to strike an Iron Age coin of there own!

  • Celts v. Romans on Saturday 30th July, 11am 3.30pm

A free drop in event for the family that is also part of the Festival of Archaeology. A Roman soldier and Celtic warrior go head-to-head in the museum and its up to visitors to decide whose side they are on. Children can make their own equipment in the craft activity area and take sides! Find out what life was like during the Roman invasion of Britain and what the Hallaton Treasure can tell us about life in Leicestershire 2000 years ago.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Museums said:

July is a very busy month at Harborough Museum with some great events lined up for visitors over the summer holiday period. From events to mark the biggest festival of archaeology in the Country to craft activities and hands on history lessons, theres something for everyone to enjoy.
