Schools selected for carbon cutting project
Twenty one schools across Leicestershire have been selected to take part in a green scheme enabling them to become more environmentally sustainable and save money in the process.
Leicestershire County Council will work with the schools to help them reduce their carbon emissions, the amount of waste they send to landfill and their water consumption.
A mix of primary and secondary schools, from every district and borough, has been chosen take part in the pioneering initiative known as SCoRE (Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency).
One school that has been selected is Glen Hills Primary in Glen Parva. Head teacher Tim Sutcliffe said Being involved in this initiative is very exciting for Glen Hills. We are very committed to reducing energy and resources, and the whole school is going to find this fun and rewarding.
Schools that take part in the scheme will undergo energy, waste and water audits, be supported to develop an action plan to help meet targets and will receive project management support in installing any relevant carbon reduction technology.
They will also have access to interest free loans to support them in reducing their emissions as well as help in delivering behaviour change activities.
Peter Osborne, County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Action, said: We are looking forward to working with these schools, sharing ideas, helping them to reduce their environmental footprint and enabling them to save more money.
We also hope that by taking part in this initiative the children will become more environmentally aware and take some of the ideas forward into their own lives.
The SCoRE scheme, which is being project managed by the Carbon Trust, is one strand of activity in the Climate East Midlands Skills Programme which is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government.
Dan Fernbank, Public Sector Manager at the Carbon Trust, said: Climate change is the biggest environmental threat facing the UK. The SCoRE programme offers Leicestershires schools a significant opportunity to reduce their carbon emissions and save money on their energy, waste and water bills.
Leicestershire County Council is working with the eight other East Midlands local authorities involved in the SCoRE programme to share their experiences and develop a long-lasting legacy for resource efficiency in schools across the region.
Leicestershire County Council is striving to be one of the top performing county council in the country when it comes to environmental issues.

Notes
Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency (SCoRE) is a project developed for Climate East Midlands by the Carbon Trust to help local authorities in the East Midlands work with a pilot group of schools deliver carbon reductions. Whilst carbon reduction is the key focus of the programme, opportunities to consider wider resource waste and water efficiency will also be considered, particularly in relation to their carbon impact.
The project will develop the capability of local authorities and schools to work collaboratively to drive forward enduring resource efficiency, maximising collaborative learning opportunities to provide them with the capability to drive forward enduring carbon reductions. The work will conclude by December 2012.
The support that will be provided will be bespoke so the outcomes and outputs produced by each local authority will vary. There will be opportunities to share experience and knowledge from the different approaches adopted, in order to maximise the learning opportunities for all concerned. The legacy of the project will be materials and experience that can be rolled out to engage the wider schools estate to give every school the opportunity to better manage its energy and carbon emissions.
SCoRE is one strand of activity in the Climate East Midlands Skills Programme which is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government. The project is being managed by the Carbon Trust.
Delivering the Climate Change Skills Programme is the main priority for Climate East Midlands during 2011/12. It is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of a national Skills Fund programme and has been developed in consultation with local authorities. The 950k programme is being commissioned and managed by East Midlands Improvement and Efficiency Partnership as a partner of Climate East Midlands.
