County's health priorities agreed
Posted on 24/06/11
Chief Executive's
County's health priorities agreed
Reducing smoking, drinking and obesity and doing more preventative work are among the priorities agreed by Leicestershires new health and wellbeing board.
Leicestershire County Councils Health and Wellbeing Board has agreed eight priorities for the next year.
The Board has selected priorities based on the evidence in Leicestershires Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, which describes the current state of the populations health and wellbeing, and specific areas where further improvements are needed.
Leicestershires cabinet member for health, Ernie White who chairs the board said: Weve agreed the top priorities that will help make Leicestershire a healthier county and how the Board can make change count for local citizens. Well be influencing commissioners to shift investment to prevention, working together on improving outcomes, and taking joint responsibility for the results.
Dr Peter Marks, Director of Public Health, said: By tackling these issues together, and engaging communities and individuals more effectively in what they can do to help, we can achieve even better results in Leicestershire - such as living longer, enjoying healthier lifestyles, preventing the onset or severity of some common health problems, and protecting the needs of the most vulnerable in society.
The board, made up of councillors, GPs and health and care officials, and including representatives of patients and the public, aims to improve health services, by:
encouraging closer joint working and efficiency savings
focussing partners on public health priorities such as tackling smoking and obesity
boosting democratic oversight of the health service
The board agreed the following priorities over the next year:
Improving health and wellbeing and reducing inequalities
i.Increasing life expectancy and reducing inequalities
ii.Reducing the prevalence of smoking
iii.Reducing the harm caused by alcohol and drugs
iv.Reducing the prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity
Improving service integration
v.Improving the care of older people with complex needs and their carers enabling more older people to live independently, with personalisation of services
vi.Improving the care of adults and children with complex needs and their carers, including those with:
Mental health needs
Complex disability needs
Improving efficiency and balancing the economy
vii.Shifting investment to prevention and early intervention
viii.Making urgent care systems for adults and children work effectively
For further details, see http://www.leics.gov.uk/healthwellbeingboard.htm

two representatives from patient consultation group Leicestershire Local Involvement Network (LINk)
the chief executive of NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland
one member of the local medical committee
