King Richard meets Henry VII again at famous battlefield!
***Photo Opportunity: History will be repeated once again when a fascinating new trail enabling visitors to explore the story of the Battle of Bosworth will be officially opened by none other than King Richard III and his arch enemy Henry Tudor. The pair will no-doubt fight until the bitter end to do the official honours. The trail will be officially opened on Friday 24th June at 2.30pm.***The actual battlefield site was finally found early in 2010 by a systematic survey led by the Battlefields Trust. The Trail, which runs in a loop around Ambion Hill, tells the story of the lead up to the battle, introduces the main protagonists and explains the events of the 22nd August, as we understand them, and the significance of the Battle in English history. Two points along the trail give views across the relocated battlefield, along with reconstructed images of what the battlefield may have looked like on the day.
On the top of Ambion Hill, the Trail includes a memorial to the battle in the form of a large walk-through sundial, which is intended to be a reflective space to commemorate the battle and all that died there. From this point you can also see Sutton Cheney Church where Richard is said to have prayed before the battle as well as Market Bosworth Church to the north.
With external interpretation of the battle, viewing points showcasing panoramic views, and a large walk-through sundial, the trail provides visitors to the site with the opportunity to reflect on this pivotal battle of 1485 where Richard III met his death and power was assumed by Henry Tudor.
The new trail is the final element of developments at the battlefield funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Jackie Dickinson, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council is attending the official opening and she said:
"The new trail is a great way for visitors to learn more about the Battle of Bosworth and offers a fantastic opportunity to re-trace King Richards footsteps throughout the beautiful countryside and see where all the action took place. The battle was such a key milestone in shaping the future of British history as we know it today and Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre preserves this for future generations. Such is its significance and popularity that the Battlefield Centre has just been shortlisted as a semi finalist in the National Lottery Awards and I would urge people to vote for it to reach the finals and win."
Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre is run by Leicestershire County Council and is the location of an award-winning exhibition, a country park, gift shop and the Tithe Barn restaurant.
The trail is open all year round and entry is free. Call 01455 290429 for further details or visit www.bosworthbattlefield.com
Votes for the National Lottery Awards can be placed at: www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards or by phoning 0844 836 9712. Voting ends at midday on Monday 20th June.
Additional Information:
For a more in-depth and personal experience, join our expert guides on fun and informative walks around the route of the new Battle of Bosworth Trail. These start from the Heritage Centre every Sunday (March to October) with extra walks on bank holiday weekends, event weekends and certain evenings.
Additionally, two brand new walks have been introduced for the 2011 season. These include:
- Costumed Guided Walks for Children 20 July and 11 August. 11am from Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre
Children and adults alike can enjoy the magic and mystery behind the history of Bosworth Battlefield in this fun and engaging walk led by costumed guides in full medieval character. The one and a half hour tour brings history alive and gives families the opportunity to see where armies have marched, where heroes have fought and died and provides the chance to learn more about how ordinary people lived at the time of the battle.
- Guided Walks through the Battlefield 4 September 10am until 4-5pm from Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre
An exclusive opportunity to walk across the newly relocated Bosworth Battlefield with our expert guides. The walk takes visitors into the heart of the Battlefield as well as to Battle related sites, such as Crown Hill, Dadlington Church and King Dicks Well. All these sites will be discussed within the context of the fascinating wider natural and historic environment with its canal, railway line, ecological and archaeological sites of interest. The route takes the walker through the area of the rout, the cannonball scatter and even through the field in which King Richard may have died. The commentary of the guides will paint a vivid picture of the action seen on these fields on the 22nd August 1485.
Please contact the battlefield for more details about these walks and for latest prices and times.
