Children from across Leicestershire are set to get on their bikes and ride to school to celebrate Bike Week.

Bike Week, which runs from June 18 to 26 aims to get more people cycling, more often.

This year, an estimated 2,500 children from a number of county schools are gearing up to take part and use pedal power to get to lessons.

Youngsters from Ashby C of E Primary and Woodstone Primary in Ravenstone will be taking part in their Bikeability training, organised by Leicestershire County Councils Road Safety and Travel Awareness team, during the week.

In North West Leicestershire, children will be able to take part in a prize draw to win 50 in accessories from Ashby-based Just for Bikes.

As well as this, an inter-schools cycling challenge is taking place in the Wigston and Groby areas to see which young people have the best cycling skills.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: Its great to see that so many county children are taking part in Bike Week.

We hope that by getting involved, more young people will be encouraged to get on their cycles and ride to school, as well as for leisure, on a regular basis.

Bike Week ties in with the councils Choose How You Move campaign which aims to help people get fit, save money, have fun and help the environment.

It also follows the launch of six colourful cycling maps which cover Leicester as well as Loughborough, Coalville, Market Harborough, Hinckley and Melton and the surrounding areas.
