Motorists advised to tighten up on vehicle security

Officers from Beaumont Leys Local Policing Unit are urging vehicle owners to tighten up on their vehicle security, following an increase in thefts from motor vehicles.

Over the last two weeks there have been 14 thefts from motor vehicles across the Abbey Ward, compared to nine thefts from motor vehicles the two weeks previous.

On Wednesday June 15, the Abbey Ward neighbourhood policing team will be visiting Abbey Park and its surrounding streets to advise motorists on how they can improve their vehicle security.

Sergeant Helen Nurse, who has been involved in setting up the campaign, said: We want to encourage motorists to remove all valuable items from their vehicles and not just to hide them within the vehicle. A number of cars have been targeted in the area when the owners have not left items on display, but did hide them within the car.

I would advise people that when they leave their vehicle unattended, they remove items from the glove box and leave it open so that any opportunist thieves can see there is nothing to take.

Satellite navigation systems are one of the most common items to be stolen from vehicles. I would advise motorists not to leave their device under the seat of their vehicle or hidden in the glove box. Instead take the device with you and remove all signs of the device, such as the holder, power cable and the suction mark that satellite navigation systems can often leave behind on windscreens.

Officers will be handing out vehicle crime prevention packs which include, ultra-violet pens (to property mark equipment like satellite navigation systems and CD players), vehicle window stickers and air fresheners displaying messages to remind motorists to remove all valuables from the vehicle, and a satellite navigation cleaning wipe to remove the suction mark from windscreens.

Advice letters and vehicle crime preventions packs will be sent to vehicle owners who have left their vehicles insecure or left items on display, to remind them that their vehicle could be at risk from opportunist thieves.

Vehicle owners who would like to receive a vehicle crime prevention pack are advised to attend Abbey Park on Wednesday June 15, where officers will be engaging with park visitors.
