1,000 helped by checklist scheme
More than a thousand vulnerable people a year are being helped by a checklist scheme that puts them in touch with extra care and support.
Help with benefits, fire safety checks and home library visits is among the support offered by Leicestershire County Councils First Contact scheme.
David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: This is a common sense scheme that is making a real difference to peoples lives.
Many older or vulnerable people dont want to make a fuss, but this is a friendly, informal way of letting them choose the support they need. Its also a real boost for carers, whether they get direct help from the scheme or they know their relatives are receiving support.
First Contact uses a simple checklist to find out what help people require to remain safe, secure and independent. Its motto is: help is just a tick away.
The scheme is run by the county council, in partnership with the district councils, the police, the fire service, voluntary groups and other organisations that work with vulnerable people.
Originally, the scheme helped around 1,000 older people per year, resulting in, on average, around four types of help for each person who completed the checklist.
Following a successful pilot in Melton, First Contact has been extended to cover vulnerable 18-59-year-olds across the county.
Whenever anyone from the scheme visits an older or vulnerable person for example, if a worker visits to install grab rails at their home, or a Trading Standards officer investigates complaints about a rogue trader they will ask the householder to fill in a simple checklist, which will help assess if they require any other help.
The scheme is a boon to carers, by providing support to their relatives, and by supporting any vulnerable people who also have caring responsibilities.
Examples of services on offer include help with benefits, fire safety checks, advice on heating and insulation, visits from the home library service and referrals to physical activity schemes.
The scheme is voluntary, so people only receive help if they want it. It helps to give people the information and advice they need to help them to choose services. If they want help, they should receive it within 28 days.
People can now access the checklist at County Halls customer service centre and at libraries and museums staff have copies of the form and can help to complete it, in person or over the phone.
Mr & Mrs C of Ashby had a checklist completed by the local Citizens Advice Bureau and as a result received a whole host of services.
These included a Pride alarm and Lifeline alarm, to help them feel safer in their home. They also had a new door and kitchen window fitted, which helped with security and helped to keep the home warm and reduce heating costs.
Mr & Mrs Cs carer, Mr Freestone, said: "My father-in-law is thankful for all of the help that both he and his wife received, as they now feel there are other people they can turn to.
"I'm grateful that people are taking an interest in my family, as the help they received means that I can feel assured that they can feel safe and independent in their own home. Help from the various agencies has helped to take the pressure off.
DS Chris Baker, of Leicestershire Polices comprehensive referral desk, said: There have been some real success stories from First Contact and Im sure that will continue, now it has been extended to all adults in the county.
The scheme helps to keep people safe and secure. By making referrals to First Contact, officers and staff across the county have played a key role in that success.
First Contact is an example of how adult social care is changing. There is an increasing emphasis on giving older people support to make their own care choices and live independently for as long as possible.
