200 have their say at the Big Health Day
More than 200 people with learning disabilities and their carers are having their say on care and health services at an event in Leicester.
A video booth is among the ways people can tell the NHS and local councils about their experiences, at the Big Health Day on Thursday, June 9th.
The event has been organised by NHS bodies and councils serving Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, to help improve services.
More than 800 people with learning disabilities responded to a questionnaire about their experience of social care and health services over the past year.
Now, more than 200 of them are attending a conference at Leicester Tigers on June 9th, to hear the initial findings and have their say.
David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council's Cabinet member for adults and communities, said: "We can only improve our services by listening to the people who use them - that's why this is such an important event.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the detailed findings later this year and working with partners in the health service to address any issues raised."
Susan Brookes, partnership officer for Mencap, backed the event. She said: Our Getting It Right campaign is aimed at equal healthcare for people with a learning disability. It asked NHS professionals to sign up to a nine-point charter.
I am currently working with the NHS to promote the campaign to pharmacies across the city, county and Rutland.
Background:
This is the third Big Health Day events held to identify health and care priorities.
The Big Health Day has been organised by NHS Leicestershire and Rutland primary care trust, Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council, Rutland County Council and Leicestershire LINK.
Feedback will be assessed in detail over the next few months, before it is incorporated into a report.
The NHS and councils are committed to making services more person-centred, so that people have the information they need to make their own choices.
Media note:
Any reporter interested in attending the event and interviewing attendees should contact Leicestershire County Councils press office on 0116 305 7046. The media slot will be at 1.30pm.
