School children help put cycling on the map
Media opportunity: 11.30am, Friday, May 27, Orton Square, Leicester. More than 300 children will be greeted by Leicester City Council's assistant mayor Cllr Sarah Russell and Chairman of Leicestershire County Council Jackie Dickinson as they arrive by bike.
OVER 300 young cyclists will be taking to the citys streets on Friday (27 May) for the sixth annual Phoenix Ride for Schools.
The children, who come from eleven schools across the city and county, have all recently completed Level 2 Bikeability training and the special bike ride has been laid on to celebrate their achievements.
They will be making the most of their new skills by cycling into Orton Square, where they will be treated to lunch, a film at Phoenix Square and entertainment in the square.
The event will also see the launch of a new range of cycling maps covering Leicester and Leicestershire.
Aimed at both commuters and leisure cyclists, the six colourful maps cover the whole of Leicester as well as Loughborough, Coalville, Melton, Hinckley and Market Harborough and their surrounding areas.
The maps have been produced thanks to a partnership between the city and county councils and include recommended routes for on and off-road cycling, as well as existing Sustrans National Cycling Network routes.
Cllr Sarah Russell, assistant city mayor at Leicester City Council, said: "The sight of hundreds of children cycling through our city centre is a wonderful thing and marks the start of a really exciting summer for cycling in Leicester, topped by the return of Sky Ride in August.
"We are committed to making Leicester a low carbon, cycle friendly city. Bikeability training and these fantastic new bike maps are just two examples of what we're doing to give even more people the skills, confidence and inspiration to enjoy Leicester by bike."
Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Jackie Dickinson, said: "Cycling is a fantastic way to get fit and explore the great outdoors. It is also a healthier and more economical way to get to school, work or the shops.
"Hopefully the Phoenix Ride will show the cyclists taking part that there are some fantastic cycle routes close to where they live that they can use to get into the city centre with their families. They can use the new cycle maps to discover more of the great routes around Leicestershire."
Copies of all six bike maps are available free of charge from Leicester Tourist Information Centre and the Bike Park in Leicester's Town Hall Square, and from bike shops across the region.
Bikeability is the modern equivalent of cycling proficiency and is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on todays roads. Around 1,500 children from city schools and more than 5,000 from county schools have taken part in Bikeability training in the last 12 months.
Amongst the children attending the Phoenix Ride will be pupils from Thurmaston's Eastfield Primary, who are currently trialling the county's first ever school bike pool scheme.
