Recycling rates rocket over Easter

Easter has sparked an 'egg'-straordinary surge in garden waste and old electrical gadget recycling.

Between Good Friday and Easter Monday, over 80 tonnes of toasters, kettles, hairdryers and other appliances were taken to Leicestershire County Council's recycling and household sites - this is 80 per cent more than last year.

Compared to last Easter, the amount of grass-cuttings, tree clippings and green garden waste collected swelled by a massive 200 per cent and the quantity of waste deposited overall rose by 60 per cent.

A wide range of electrical items can be given a new lease of life through recycling including electric toothbrushes, hair straighteners, drills, sanders, laptops, MP3s, mobile phones, lawnmowers, strimmers, food mixers, irons and lights.

The gadgets are dismantled into raw materials and put to new uses - a typical iron contains enough steel to make 13 food cans and plastic recycled from appliances such as kettles or irons can be re-used in new games consoles or hairdryers.

Tony Kershaw, County Council cabinet member for waste management, said: "The Easter weekend is always one of the busiest times at our sites and I'm pleased that our contractors coped admirably with the extra demand.

"Many residents may not think of old lawnmowers or MP3s as recyclable but it's good news that they're being given a new lease of life.

"Sending less rubbish to landfill not only reduces pollution but also saves money so I'm delighted that people are making the most of the facilities at our recycling centres.

"Leicestershire is the top county partnership for reuse and recycling but we're committed to driving down waste sent to landfill."

Old electrical goods can be taken to any of the county council's 14 recycling and household waste sites, along with a range of items including scrap metal, clothes and garden waste, as well as household rubbish.
