Joint press release issued on behalf of Leicestershire Constabulary, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust:

Police and Fire officers have launched a joint investigation following a serious fire which broke out in a ward at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service received an initial report of the fire in Ward 8 of the Balmoral Building at 00:20 hrs this morning (May 5, 2011).

Fire officers attended the scene and, using breathing apparatus, quickly extinguished the fire.

Extensive fire damage has been caused to a bay within Ward 8, together with extensive smoke damage to the remainder of the ward. A number of other wards within the hospital were initially affected by smoke, but this has now been cleared.

One patient was slightly injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment. Relatives of this patient have been informed.

A total of 105 patients, and relevant staff, were evacuated from Wards 7, 8, 9, 11, 16 and 25 to other wards within the hospital.

Relatives of patients within the hospital should be reassured that all patients have been accounted for and have been safely relocated to other wards within the hospital and made comfortable.

Ward 8 is currently closed and cordoned off whilst forensic investigation takes place.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

At the height of the incident seven fire appliances were in attendance, in addition to the Incident Support Unit and Command Support Vehicle. All fire appliances left the scene at approximately 3.30am.

Fire Incident Commander Dave Watson has praised the quick response by hospital staff in assisting the evacuation of the patients from the affected wards.
