School carbon cutting project launched

An ambitious new project to encourage county schools to reduce their environmental impact has been launched.

Leicestershire County Council will initially work with 21 schools, primary and secondary, in a bid to get them thinking about the environment and to save money.

As well as helping them reduce their carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2014/14, the council will also support them in reducing the amount of waste they send to landfill, as well as their water consumption.

Schools are currently being recruited for the scheme, known as SCoRE (Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency). The initiative, which is being project managed by the Carbon Trust, is one strand of activity in the Climate East Midlands Skills Programme which is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government.

Matthew Lugg, County Council Director for Environment and Transport, said: The council is working hard to reduce its environmental impact and this work with our schools is just one way of achieving this.

We not only hope the scheme will see a marked reduction in the chosen schools carbon emissions and waste and water consumption, but we also hope the messages about being environmentally aware will make a real impact with pupils.

Leicestershire schools that take part in the scheme will undergo energy, waste and water audits, be supported to develop an action plan to help meet the target and will receive project management support in installing relevant carbon reduction technology.

They will also have access to free loans to support them in reducing their emissions as well as help in delivering behaviour change activities.

Leicestershire County Council is striving to be the top performing county council in the country when it comes to environmental issues.

Notes

Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency (SCoRE) is a project developed by Climate East Midlands to help local authorities in the East Midlands work with a pilot group of schools deliver carbon reductions. Whilst carbon reduction is the key focus of the programme, opportunities to consider wider resource waste and water efficiency will also be considered, particularly in relation to their carbon impact.

The project will develop the capability of local authorities and schools to work collaboratively to drive forward enduring resource efficiency, maximising collaborative learning opportunities to provide them with the capability to drive forward enduring carbon reductions. The work will conclude by December 2012.

The support that will be provided will be bespoke so the outcomes and outputs produced by each local authority will vary. There will be opportunities to share experience and knowledge from the different approaches adopted, in order to maximise the learning opportunities for all concerned. The legacy of the project will processes that can be rolled out to engage the wider schools estate to give every school the opportunity to better manage its energy and carbon emissions.

SCoRE is one strand of activity in the Climate East Midlands Skills Programme which is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government. The project is being managed by the Carbon Trust. One of the aims of the programme is to support local authorities more generally in achieving reductions in carbon emissions.

Delivering the Climate Change Skills Programme is the main priority for Climate East Midlands during 2011/12. It is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of a national Skills Fund programme and has been developed in consultation with local authorities. The 950k programme is being commissioned and managed by East Midlands Improvement and Efficiency Partnership as a partner of Climate East Midlands.
