A team of police volunteers in Melton Mowbray have been presented with a business award in recognition of their contribution to community safety.

The volunteers, who monitor the towns CCTV cameras, were surprised to be invited to the third Melton Times Business Awards at the banqueting suite of the cattle market. They were one of four finalists to be nominated for the Contribution to the Community category and were delighted to be told theyd won. The award is sponsored by the Melton Town Centre Partnership.

Volunteers have monitored the CCTV cameras in the control room at Melton police station since December 2000. They work during the day and throughout Friday and Saturday night, monitoring the cameras and using the towns retail radio system to provide the police, door staff, licensees and local businesses with relevant information. During the past 11 years, members of the team have given an average of 180 hours per month of their own time to monitoring the cameras. Their work, and the evidence they have provided over the years, has contributed to hundreds of arrests and many convictions in court. The system is funded in partnership with Melton Borough Council and the police.

During the day, the system is used in conjunction with the towns retail radio scheme, SMART (Melton against Retail Theft) and at night the cameras help to support Pubwatch members who also use the retail radios to communicate with each other, and the police, about troublemakers or alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour.

Roger Petchey, the CCTV Co-ordinator at Melton, picked up the award on behalf of the team. He said; It is superb be given this award in recognition of the invaluable contribution the team make to keeping Melton town centre a safe place to be. Many of the volunteers work very anti-social hours linking in with police officers, land lords, door staff and shop keepers throughout the town. The strength of the system lies in the way everyone works together to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Inspector John Gray, Commander of Melton Mowbray local policing unit, said; This award reflects the invaluable contribution the volunteers make to keeping Melton a safe place during the day and during the evenings they are an asset to Melton and I am pleased they have received the recognition they deserve.

The partnership is always keen to hear from people whod like to become a police volunteer in Melton. You can find more information on the Leicestershire Constabulary website at www.leics.police.uk or go into the Front Enquiry Office at Melton Police Station on King Street and ask about volunteering.
