Care contracts save 2.5m and avoid rise for users

New county council care contracts will save around 2.5 million per year and avoid an increase in home care charges.

Leicestershire County Council says its new home care contract will bring value for money to Council Taxpayers and service users.

The councils Adults and Communities department commissions more than 40,000 hours of home care services from the independent sector per week.

By recommissioning contracts with 12 providers, the council has managed to save around 2.5 million and peg the maximum hourly charge for home care services to 12.86, at a time when most councils are raising their charges.

The services covered by these contracts include personal care, dementia care, shopping and services for disabled children.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: The new contract is great news for service users and Council Taxpayers alike it achieves value for money at a time when other councils are putting up bills.

Only 68 per cent of the 5,000 people who use the councils home care services have to pay the charge themselves.

The council is setting up an approved list of providers, so that service users who have personal budgets under the personalisation scheme can choose to purchase services directly.
