Cabinet to consider school age ranges
Posted on 29/03/11
Cabinet Office
Cabinet to consider school age ranges
Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet is being asked to consider its view should any schools wish to discuss with the local authority changing their age range.
At present, the vast majority of students in Leicestershire transfer secondary school at age 14.
Cabinet will be asked to approve discussions to take place between the council and schools expressing an interest in changing their age range to 11-16 or 11-19 and for schools to consult on any proposals where appropriate.
The development of 11-16 or 11-19 schools in Leicestershire provides an opportunity to improve choice in secondary school provision, raise standards and improve students achievements.
Developing all through schools is in keeping with central government policy which promotes the expansion of successful secondary schools and removes the need to transfer school at age 14, which some students find difficult.
Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Lead Member for the Children and Young Peoples Service, said: It is only right for schools to consider how they can deliver the best possible education and help students reach the highest standards.
"However there is a need to ensure that our schools are sustainable and offer a coherent approach to secondary education in Leicestershire. If the Cabinet approves discussions, I will be interested to hear schools proposals to achieve this change.
Cabinet meets on April 5th.
