Think outside the box and reduce waste this Easter

Leicestershire residents are being urged to think outside the box and help reduce the amount of Easter egg packaging the county sends to landfill.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnerships Think Packaging! campaign aims to encourage people to reduce egg-cessive Easter packaging, which amounts to approx 3,000 tonnes of waste in the UK every year.

Having a crack at making your own chocolate eggs or shelling out on ones with less wrapping, rather than boxed eggs, can all help reduce the countys waste.

As part of the drive to raise awareness, the partnership will be running a competition with county schoolchildren, encouraging them to design a leaflet containing advice on reducing and reusing Easter packaging.

Roadshows will also be held at various sites around the county to give practical advice on making Easter gifts and choosing less packaged eggs this Easter. At the events people will be able to get ideas on alternative Easter gifts, benefit from advice on smart shopping and discover what manufacturers are doing to help.

Tony Kershaw, Chairman of Leicestershire Waste Partnership and County Council Cabinet Member for Waste, said: Packaging is needed to protect products and it can help food last longer, but excess packaging is a waste.

We can help reduce the amount being sent to landfill here in Leicestershire this Easter by following a few simple tips.

Ideas to help reduce Easter egg packaging waste include:

Buying foil wrapped Easter eggs and bunnies rather than boxed ones

Choosing eggs with reduced packaging, a smaller box or packaged with recycled materials

Sending an e-card instead of an Easter one to reduce waste

Making your own Easter egg using special moulds

More information about reducing packaging waste and making your own Easter eggs and gifts can be found at: www.lesswaste.org.uk

Roadshows will be held on:

  • Saturday, April 2: Loughborough Market, 9am 3pm
  • Tuesday, April 5: Bell Street, Wigston, 9am 3pm
  • Thursday, April 7: Morrisons, Coalville, 9am 3pm
  • Friday, April 8: Morrisons, Hinckley, 9am 3pm
  • Friday, April 15: Sainsbury, Market Harborough, 9am 3pm

Notes

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is made up of the seven districts of Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, together with the County Council.

The Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management.

It aims to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill by preventing waste in the first place, encouraging reuse, recycling and composting, and treating whats leftover before disposal.

Working together, the partners aim to recycle or compost 58% of rubbish by 2017
