Villages reduce their carbon footprint

Theyre a hub for get-togethers, WI meetings and keep fit classes, but now villagers across the county are turning their attention on reducing their community buildings carbon footprint.

A number of villages had cosier and more environmentally friendly community venues during the winter after benefiting from support from Leicestershire County Council.

Hundreds of pounds in energy bills will now be saved after villagers made bids for SHIRE Community Climate Change grants to part fund work at venues such as community centres and village and church halls to reduce their carbon emissions and keep warm.

The scheme enabled each building to have a professional energy audit to work out how energy efficient they were before any work took place.

Venues that have benefited include:

Barwell Methodist Church, which is home to groups such as Age Concern, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides , Barwell W.I and Weightwatchers, was given around 4,405 towards a heating project to replace 27-year-old boilers.

The estimated financial savings the project is expected to produce is around 271 a year. The work is expected to improve the buildings energy rating from an E rating to a D.

Thurnby Memorial Hall, which houses the local bingo club and the Thurnby and Bushby Society, was offered 4,780 towards a heating project to replace a boiler, including temperature control valves and a heat exchange unit, helping to conserve water.

The boiler was 40-years-old and roughly 60-65 per cent efficient compared to the new boiler which has an efficiency of more than 90 per cent and is estimated to reduce gas use by 30-40 per cent.

Stapleton Village Hall, which is home to keep fit classes, social events, yoga and dancing events and the Parish Council, was offered around 2,791 towards its energy saving scheme.

The initiative involved installing a new suspended ceiling in its Victorian school room, which included 200 mm of insulation, as well as energy efficient lighting and a seven day timer / programmer to hot water in the toilet.

The estimated annual financial savings the project will produce is approx 193 a year. The work is expected to improve the buildings energy rating from a G to an E.

Blaby Social Centre, which is home to a variety of groups including the Cheeky Monkeys play group, Flower Guild and the Drama Group, was offered 4,212 towards a new suspended ceiling and dimmable low energy lighting.

The tiles used in its ceiling save 162 more times Co2 than they emitted during manufacture and are made of a mixture of naturally occurring and recycled materials.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: These community halls have been nice and snug this winter thanks to these initiatives.

By installing these new measures they are not only saving on their energy bills every year, but are also leading by example and reducing their carbon footprint.

Chairman of Stapleton Village Hall, Roy Stafford, said: We are very grateful to the County Council for its contribution to our scheme to make our village hall more energy efficient.

The improvements have really made a difference and we have had some very positive comments from villagers.

Information and application forms for the grant scheme for 2011/2012 will be available from Friday, April 1 at:
