1.1m unit gives carers a break

A 1.1 million unit that offers short stays for people with disabilities, giving their carers a break, is being officially opened by Leicestershire County Council.

Carlton Drive in Wigston is a short break respite unit for up to six adults who have learning or physical disabilities. Since it opened in May 2010, around 30 families have benefited, from across south Leicestershire.

David Sprason, the countys Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: This is an excellent service, which supports some of the unsung heroes who care for relatives across Leicestershire.

This service gives carers a break, by providing high quality support for the people they look after. Its an example of how we have invested in services that promote independence and helping people to help themselves.

Service users receive regular short breaks, ranging from one night stays to two or three weeks, depending upon their needs.

The unit also offers emergency placements for families and service users, where their normal care arrangements have gone into crisis or broken down.

The building is split into two wings, each accommodating up to three people at a time. Each wing is self contained with three en suite bedrooms and its own lounge/dining room, kitchen and laundry room.

Three of the bedrooms are fully equipped with hoists and specialist bathing facilities, to provide services for people who have difficulty with their mobility.

The council is looking at a number of new referrals particularly from younger people transferring from childrens services.

The building will be officially opened by the Solicitor General Edward Garnier, Q.C, M.P and county council chairman Peter Osborne, at 12.00 noon on Friday, January 28th.

Media note:

Members of the media interested in attending should contact the press office on 0116 305 7046. A couple of carers whose son uses the unit will be available for interview on the day.
