Julie Muvumbu

A 35-year-old man has today (Wednesday January 12, 2011) been sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to the murder of his former partner.

Archibald Gurure, (07/06/75) of Humberstone Road, Leicester pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to the murder of Julie Muvumbu (44) on the evening of March 25, 2010

He has been sentenced toserve a minimum of 18 years.

The court heard how Gurure was at Julies flat in Gotham Street where the pair had been drinking heavily together.

In the early hours of the morning there was an argument between the two which resulted in Gurure assaulting Juliewith a radiator and causing fatal head injuries. Gurure then mutilated her body.

The following morning (March 26) Gurure contacted family to inform them that he had killed his girlfriend. The police were informed and officers attended an address in Gotham Street where they discovered the body of Julie.

Gurure was arrested by officers later that evening.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Castle, the senior investigating officer said: This was a particularly harrowing case for the officers who dealt with the initial scene.

The weight of evidence gathered by the investigation team and provided by key witnesses was significant in Gurure entering a guilty plea.

The fact that he pleaded guilty to murder has prevented the families of both the suspect and the victim from having to endure the ordeal of a trial.

This was a tragic case which has impacted on the victims family both here in the UK and back in her own country of Zimbabwe. I hope that now the case is over it will offer some closure to Julies family and they will be able to start to rebuild their lives.

Following todays sentencing, Julies family have issued the following statement:

The family has gone through a roller coaster of emotions in the past 10 months. Julia was a kind, caring person, full of love and life. She was such a chatter-box too, who brought the family together in good time and bad times, a true inspiration.

The devastation, emptiness, especially on her four children is unimaginable. Her three girls, Yvonne, Yvette and Mandy, who is still at university and Colin, have lost the bread winner in the family. Her father Mr Dlamini said that the family in Zimbabwe was looking forward to her coming home, but not in the sad manner she went, in a coffin. He also would like to thank the court for a heavy sentence on Archibold Gurure for taking away a young life so dear to us.

The family would to thank the police for the hard work and support they have put into making sure that a murderer is taken out of the streets. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the Leicester community and Zimbabwe community in the UK for their overwhelming support in making sure Julia got a dignified burial in Harare.
