A man has been charged after he was found carrying a knife during a metal detector arch operation in Leicester last night.

Officers took the airport style arch to Market Street and Humberstone Gate yesterday evening (Thursday January 6), where a total of 385 people walked through.

Two people were stopped and searched during the operation and a 20-year-old man was arrested and later charged with possessing a knife in a public place.

Sergeant Siobhan Gorman, the Sergeant for the Neighbourhood Action Team in the city centre, said: We always hope that these operations will send out a positive message to people who live in and visit Leicester. We want them to know that we are working hard to keep knife crime low and also that we do take it seriously, even though it isnt a major problem in Leicester.

I think the result of last nights operation demonstrates just how seriously we take knife crime and will hopefully act as a warning to anyone else who may consider carrying a knife in Leicester.

It was only last month that five men in Leicester received a total of 26 years in prison for robbery where an axe was used to threaten the victims. Even just carrying a knife is an offence and this is something that people sometimes forget.

Carrying a knife will NOT protect you, in fact it increases your chances of becoming a victim of knife crime. Your knife could be used against you and pulling a knife on someone could cause them to react by pulling a knife on you. Not only that but getting in to trouble with the police for knife related crime can have serious effects on your future.

The operations are being funded through the Government project TKAP, which focuses on tackling knife and serious youth violence in Leicester. Last April (2010) Leicester city centre was chosen to take part in the project and the Safer Leicester Partnership has been carrying out various operations since.
