Paulius Troninas

A 19-year-old man has today (Friday January 7, 2011) been found guilty of the assault and rape of a woman in Loughborough.

Paulius Troninas, 19, of Paget Street, Loughborough was found guilty of rape and section 18 grievous bodily harm following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

He will be sentenced on Monday January 10, 2011.

The charges relates to an incident in the early hours of Sunday April 18, 2010 after a 31-year-old woman had left a pub in the town centre followinga night out with a friend.

As she made her way home, she was approached by Troninas who struck her up a conversation with her. During her route, she walked along an alleyway where Troninas subjected her to a violent and brutal attack.

During the assault, the woman received swelling to her brain and multiple fractures to her skull. She spent several weeks in hospital recovering from her injuries.

Troninas, who was found nearby with blood on his clothes, was arrested. He was later charged and remanded into custody.

Detective Constable Kate Dabrowska who led the investigation has praised the victim for her bravery: She has been incredibly strong and it is a credit to her personality and determination not to let such a horrendous attack affect her life. She is determined to put this behind her and move on with her life.

Troninas is a violent, sex offender who fully deserves the punishment given to him and I hope that todays verdict acts as some kind of reassurance for the victim that he will be paying for his crime.

"Cases of this nature are extremely rare but all rape whatever the circumstances is viewed by Leicestershire Constabulary as among the most serious of offences. I would like to praise the investigation team and the CPS prosecutors working on this case for their commitment and determination to ensure the victim got the justice she deserved."

Following the sentencing the judgecommended Leicestershire Constabulary in particular DC Kate Dabrowska, PC Claire Mitchell, Sgt Adrian Gray, PC Devin Martin and Sgt Wayne Chapman for their involvement in the case.
