Recycle cards to boost woodland

Recycle cards to boost woodland
Homeowners taking down decorations on Twelfth Night are urged to transform Christmas trees into nourishing compost and cards into thriving woodland.
This new year, the County Council is supporting the Woodland Trust's scheme where trees are planted in exchange for Christmas cards being recycled.
Each year, around one billion Christmas cards are sent across the UK - thats 17 for every man, woman and child in the country.
Cards can be taken to any of the council's recycling and household waste sites, service shops or libraries in Leicestershire. Marks and Spencers, Homesense and TK Maxx are also collecting Christmas cards for recycling.
To turn a real Christmas tree into compost, simply take it to any recycling and household waste site or contact your district council to find out if they make special arrangements to collect trees as part of their kerbside recycling service.
Tony Kershaw, County Council cabinet member for waste management, said: "If the one billion cards sent across the country were all sent to landfill, the space needed would be enormous. By recycling cards, residents will not only cut waste sent to landfill but save trees as well by raising money for the Woodland Trust.
"Around seven million real Christmas trees are purchased in the UK each year and I would urge anyone who cannot re-plant it in the garden to recycle it."
The County Council has 14 recycling and household waste sites across Leicestershire where residents can take a range of items to recycle, including electrical goods, scrap metal, clothes and garden waste, as well as household rubbish.
Last year, over 53,000 tonnes of rubbish was recycled, reused or composted at the recycling and household waste sites.
At this time of year, all sites are open from 8am until 6pm, seven-days-a-week.
For more information on the sites or recycling and reuse, please visit www.leics.gov.uk/waste or call 0116 305 7005.
